Omaha Poker rules and the basic strategy

There are many variations of online poker from draw games, stud games to holdem variants like Texas Holdem and Omaha. Texas Holdem is likely to be the most popular of all the variants, but recently Omaha has increased its popularity especially among professional poker players.

Omaha poker is also divided into several styles: Omaha High (where the highest hand wins the entire pot) and Pot Limit Omaha, or PLO (this game is played at the biggest stakes, where  pots of over a half-million dollars are played for every day).

Some words about rules: in this game each player is dealt four cards. The purpose of Omaha poker, following to the official Omaha rules, is to get the best five card hand on the table. And you should select two of four of your pocket cards and also three of the five cards on the playing area. The most distinguishing feature of Omaha poker is that you cannot apply so many cards as you would like, nor from the hole or the board.

The basic strategy of the game is the aggressive or tight game, and if you prefer the combination of proper starting-hand selection and good pre-flop and flop play, your chances to win are rather large. Bluffs are rarely used in Omaha, unlike in Texas Holdem. But some players make such a mistake: they bluff too often, and they don’t pay attention that bluffing in Omaha is that much harder, because with so many cards in play someone usually has the nuts or close to it by the river. Choose a more straightforward style, while playing Omaha poker, and it will bring you best results.
